These trees have been closed to picking since 2006. Cuttings were taken from these trees and planted elsewhere in the park. Most tea labeled "Dahongpao" (Big Red Robe) is produced outside Wuyishan Park and is not made with the original cultivar. This one is as close to the "original taste" as possible, coming from the Zhengyan, or "core," area near the original trees. This area features towering rock formations, streams, and tea shrubs growing in rich, rocky soil, ensuring an authentic "yancha" (rock tea) taste!

Fun Fact #2: The name Dahongpao ("Big Red Robe") comes from the legend of a Buddhist monk who became exhausted while traveling to take a life-changing exam. Stopping at a Buddhist temple in Wuyishan, a monk gave him some tea made from the local tea plants. Refreshed, he completed the journey and received the top test score as well as a red silk robe. On his return home, he honored the tea plants by covering them with his red robe.

Fun Fact #3: In 1972, President Nixon made a historic visit to China and was gifted 200 grams of dahongpao from the original Mother Trees by Chairman Mao Zedong. At first, President Nixon was insulted by such a gift, until he learned that the total production of this "best tea in China" was only 500 grams per year. So, in effect, Nixon was given "half of the country's supply". In the end, Nixon understood and was impressed by being given such a rare and precious gift!

Similar Teas: Wuyi Rock Oolong, Rou Gui Cinnamon Cliff
